Found out a former UK colleague of mine lost her life to cancer. Everyone said she was doing alright, but disease progresses terrifyingly fast in some cases.

Because of the weird nature of code shares and the pandemic I am traveling next month to Spain from the USA via a French airline and a Dutch Airline.

It seems so odd to me that CentOS 8 is EOL but 7 gets another couple of years. I'm already running Rocky on some dev boxes. I have nothing against stream, I just don't appreciate how RHEL muscled everyone into this.

LOL the state department's travel advisory on Spain makes it sound like El-Salvador peak conflict

I don't know if this is true or not, but it's definitely a mood.

It irritates me that every year we get snow, every year the forecasting is pretty good, and every year the city does absolutely fuck all prep.

Every little podunk township has their roads completely clear, but the city does nothing. It makes getting to work so stressful if there is more than 2" forecast I just stay home.

So I have to trade off a bit of storage inefficiency for some convenience. It's fine.

The biggest drawback is understanding sandboxing and that's just a little bit of work. It's really pretty easy once you're all set up.

I know people rag on Flatpak but good grief it's convenient when you don't want to fuck about with multilib.

A few colleagues had the 'rona over the New Year. We're all vaxxed; one was asymptomatic but tested because he'd been working with a positive case.

I suspect we will be fully remote again in no time at all. This present surge seems to be much less serious though, anecdotally.

Lets see if the Windows bootloader tries to eat my Linux partition again...

Got a new board for son's PC and of course the linux install is just 'okay, whatever' but WIndows has shit itself, so reinstalling. A small chore, but I am reminded of Win 10's reluctance to install to something that's not the first drive, which is enormously annoying and *very* Microsoft. Thankfully I have an imaged backup which I can repair with WinPE.

It's interesting for me that my old little lacie ruggedized drive - over USB3 - actually outperforms a WD spinner I have in the case. Makes it viable as semipermanent storage, which is nice.

People out there feeling weird about having a good 2021: mine was shite, and I enjoyed seeing every personal triumph from all of youse. More beating the odds, please and thank you.

Happy New Year to all my fediverse friends. I hope 2022 is great for you, I really do.

The film is painfully aware it's not the sequel people wanted, but goes to some lengths to frame this as by design.
