We stumbled into film upon asking questions about a horse's gallop. Once we had photos taken in rapid succession, we discovered that the horse & rider appeared to move when we flipped through them. This was a fascinating concept many at the time felt compelled to explore scientifically and artistically. Edison built a camera to better automate the process. US filmmakers moved to California to avoid Edison's hatred of long form media & his lawyers. Russions explored the power of editting.

Our eyes contain brightness-sensitive "rods", and "cones" sensitive to specific hue ranges (some short like red, some medium like green, and/or some long like blue). One Thomas Young guessed this in 1802, & Hermann von Helmholtz refined the theory in 1850.

Wikipedia isn't explaining their reasoning, but in 1861 James Clerk Maxwell demonstrated splitting a photo up into red, green, & blue components worked to produce a colour photograph.
