My worry is the future of the Fedi becomes a multi-tier system.
When Masto started out, its creator seemed happy for every other implementation to die, and it could be argued he encouraged as much (there is a parallel to systemd in all of this) and now there is might on his side.

So, they recreate the old world in the new, and have the infrastructure and money (I don't just mean .social, but some of its relatives) to steer the project in any direction they want.

@sullybiker

Any human group, public or private, is eventually consumed by the desire for monopoly.

@amerika It'll happen, and we'll all be forced to go along with it.

@sullybiker

Unless we come up with another plan.

I still believe in the #LiberalValues of open discussion and learning from the past.

@amerika The plan maybe just leaving them to it, let them wither on the branch.

@sullybiker

Then they rule us and we diminish.

It's a hard question, to be fair, but I think it is worth fighting for sanity and realism.

@amerika I think the people that have been here for a while want to be here. For others it just isn't important, and so it is still possible they won't stick around.

I was thinking when Twitter contracts it will be a much better place for some users.

@sullybiker

In my view, it's a great place for just about anyone.

There needs to be a culture that resists the tendency toward control by those who do not have the best interests of the whole at heart, however.

@amerika That tends to be a small group of powerful people. Journalists, techbros, crypto people. They have large levers.

For example a tech journal writes a piece "Fedi should be this" and gets all their network to share it.

@amerika They lost their connect at the other place, and people don't give that power up easily, so they coerce to make it happen again. I do not trust Eugen to have not already been compromised in this way.

@sullybiker the upside is we can always fork

eugen has always been a bit of a shit when it came to contributing, and it's always been super annoying working "with" him

best options if it gets to bad is just simply to fork if needed

@aimlessComposer Indeed. It's one of those things where the dominant tech isn't always the best tech, and I say it as a Masto user (although I am going to play with Pleroma on my other VPS).

@sullybiker i hate pleroma, both for the association with just the shittiest people on the fediverse and also aesthetically, but super fair. Seems to be pretty light.

I tend to just use Glitch-Soc Mastodon and make mods to that if I really need something that isn't there

@aimlessComposer I'm tangentially aware with some of the drama that happened when it emerged, but I am intrigued by the very good footprint, but yes, ALL of my blocks are from that platform.

@sullybiker oh theres absolutely some hosted on mastodon and misskey on my list too, but 95% of them are pleroma and i have no idea why lol

but yeah, the footprint seems really solid, I just wish it looked

different ig lol

@aimlessComposer It seems to be the platform of choice for furious weebs

@sullybiker it rly does, which is weird because misskey exists, it looks aesthetically better, and it's japanese so like

iunno man lol

The axiom, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely,” is true for a reason.
