My worry is the future of the Fedi becomes a multi-tier system.
When Masto started out, its creator seemed happy for every other implementation to die, and it could be argued he encouraged as much (there is a parallel to systemd in all of this) and now there is might on his side.
So, they recreate the old world in the new, and have the infrastructure and money (I don't just mean .social, but some of its relatives) to steer the project in any direction they want.
Any human group, public or private, is eventually consumed by the desire for monopoly.
@amerika It'll happen, and we'll all be forced to go along with it.
Unless we come up with another plan.
I still believe in the #LiberalValues of open discussion and learning from the past.
@amerika The plan maybe just leaving them to it, let them wither on the branch.
Then they rule us and we diminish.
It's a hard question, to be fair, but I think it is worth fighting for sanity and realism.
@amerika I think the people that have been here for a while want to be here. For others it just isn't important, and so it is still possible they won't stick around.
I was thinking when Twitter contracts it will be a much better place for some users.
In my view, it's a great place for just about anyone.
There needs to be a culture that resists the tendency toward control by those who do not have the best interests of the whole at heart, however.
