I'm watching The Sheepman (1958), a western starring Glenn Ford.

One of the early scenes shows a train (locomotive) coming into town. It is belching black smoke. A few seconds later the train is shown to be using wood as fuel.

Burning wood would never produce black smoke. Did the director actually insist on coal (or a few car tyres) for dramatic/visual reasons?

Yeah, probably right. Why go to all the bother of loading it with wood, why not show the coal? Maybe, it is a plot point later.

@fitheach Might have been a period thing in that they knew they're supposed to be wood fired - production does weird things at times!
