Huh apparently last night a container ship almost hit a New York bridge.

Thanks to a commenter on gcaptain the link to a better news source than the NY Post.

Also it sounds like the maritime executive writer threw some shade at Baltimore.

The ship was about the same size and built at the same korean shipyard as baltimore, but New York harbor had tugs escorting the ship as a "routine safety measure", and has also added defensive walls around the piers of their bridge.

@alienghic I was going to add I will be surprised if these panamax ships are allowed on their own power now. A tug with a line fore and aft will be the norm for a while.

At the very least it sounds like tugs should be close by.

@alienghic When I lived on the Solent they'd have a tug on the bigger ships because the wind would move them about. There wasn't much to hit there, apart from Fawley oil terminal...but by the time they are up there they are on their own power and making good speed.
