Reading @mwlucas@bsd.network anecdote about 1984 internet made me wonder: When was everyone's first encounter with 'net?
Mine was 1994, at the University of York. Mosaic (I think) and soo much Sci-Fi, .gov sites, and a bit of porn. Plus ca change...
92-93 I think. Went with a student friend who had contacts in college. We snuck in the computer services building and got visitors' pass. Wham, your terminal's on, and it got gopher!!
Then I got a number of a free internet provider (or did our phone co provide? I forgot), and connected using dial up and Trumpet Winsock. 🎺
Ah, those were the days...
@rick_777 @mwlucas@bsd.network Also a friend at the university for me. I didn't get my home access for a long time. Parents got an ISP before I did!
lowering the ed(1) old-fart façade
@sullybiker @mwlucas Though I put on an old-fart façade for this account, my first online experiences were dial-up BBS & shell accounts (at 1200 baud) in the 80s.
@sullybiker @mwlucas 1998, I was six and my dad showed me the new Cartoon Network website and we’d watch the videos together
....Just one year later it already started to look different, with a few media outlets appearing. I remember autosport.com had a pretty comprehensive site up in '95. About one year after that, eCommerce (ugh) started being taken seriously.
