Reading @mwlucas@bsd.network anecdote about 1984 internet made me wonder: When was everyone's first encounter with 'net?

Mine was 1994, at the University of York. Mosaic (I think) and soo much Sci-Fi, .gov sites, and a bit of porn. Plus ca change...

....Just one year later it already started to look different, with a few media outlets appearing. I remember autosport.com had a pretty comprehensive site up in '95. About one year after that, eCommerce (ugh) started being taken seriously.

...I think it was 1998 where I first saw webcams. Really llow refresh rate, but you could see Dealey Plaza from multiple angles on earthcam. Also bits of Manhattan.

It seemed surreal being able to watch New Yorkers stroll past a window in Times Square from my office chair in SE England.

92-93 I think. Went with a student friend who had contacts in college. We snuck in the computer services building and got visitors' pass. Wham, your terminal's on, and it got gopher!!

Then I got a number of a free internet provider (or did our phone co provide? I forgot), and connected using dial up and Trumpet Winsock. 🎺

Ah, those were the days...

@sullybiker @mwlucas Though I put on an old-fart façade for this account, my first online experiences were dial-up BBS & shell accounts (at 1200 baud) in the 80s.
