My take is not so much that Parler isn't dumb, so much that people who still use Twitter or Facebook have no standing to point and laugh at them.

@guizzy The people dumping and graphing the data don't care they're making it easy to triangulate users in places like Iran and Venezuela.

@sullybiker Yeah, but if users in Iran and Venezuela were posting data with the EXIF geolocation still on, I'd be surprised if their government either didn't care about them or already had all that information. They're making it easy, but for actors with the ressources of a state, it was already likely trivial.

@guizzy That's a good point but consider that people are already expressing surprise at media that was ultimately never hidden from public eyes. It's just been presented and cherry picked for easy consumption.

If users don't know that identifying EXIF (and XMP) metadata is automatically inserted, or if they don't know how to shut it off (both of which are true of most people I know in person), then, yes, the government of their country definitely knows more about them than they think it does.

It is easy to laugh at Parler for not stripping this data, but do our Fediverse sites strip it? Does Twitter? Do Facebook / WhatsApp / Instagram? (I haven't checked to see whether any of the above does so.)

Isn't Parler just something like WordPress + some social plugin?
