As it inevitably skews towards bigger chord geared turbofans with huge diameters, planes are going to look different because they are running out of space below the wings.
This need for big fan and high bypass dictated the positioning on the 737MAX, which in turn caused all the problems as it had different aerodynamics versus the previous model. So to save time and money they came up with a software fix, and 346 people died because the implementation was utter shit.
