A fairly innocuous photo of mine and my friend's bikes, when I met at a local gas station for the first evening ride of Spring. Later that day the retina in my left eye would detach, causing a pretty serious loss of vision which dogs me to this day.
@sullybiker That's so sad. Vision is one of the most important things life, imo.
@SeventhMagpie Yes. Unfortunately this was just the beginning.
@sullybiker How bad is it? Can you see with that eye?
@SeventhMagpie The central vision is completely blurry, but I have good peripheral vision in it. Unfortunately I developed CAR (cancer associated retinopathy) in both eyes later that year, so I have damage on the right side too.
@SeventhMagpie This is where retinal cells are genetically similar to cancerous cells, and an autoimmune response causes antibodies to attack healthy cells which unfortunately happen to be in my eyes
@sullybiker That's awful. :( Such false positives in biology are the worst.
@SeventhMagpie Yes, it's been a stressful couple of years, but I'm still alive, so I'll take it.
@SeventhMagpie On one hand, yes, but it is also correlated with good survival outcomes, which so far has been true. It is a small but important silver lining.
