I am increasingly convinced that the much healthier atmosphere on the Fedi is because there's no algorithmic fuck-fuck games like trends or 'popular', which is usually a codified way of increasing engagement, or as it is more commonly known, arguing with people you don't know, about things you don't care about.
@sullybiker@sully.site Sure - I feel like there's more to it, though. There's plenty of instances that have a 'trending' feature (not sure how accurate or broken those generally are, but they're there, right?), and humans are certainly the thing that make things popular or active here.
There isn't any nasty algorithm amplifying dopamine hits in the way of divisiveness and anger, though. That, and the fact that the fediverse isn't controlled by a single entity, so those trying to stoke hate and division are routed around or broken off to their own hate islands, to me, are what make the fediverse so much better.
I hope I am appearing as respectfully agreeing and disagreeing? 😃
