A user brings me an external HD. "I need the data off this" She announces. I plug it into one of our bench machines. "This is encrypted." I say.

She shrugs and says "I know. Can you get the data off it?"

I swear we deal with this kind of shit every day.


My campus computer security team complains that hacker movies have given people unrealistic expectations about breaking encryption.

@alienghic I think there's a bit of that, definitely.

@alienghic I think people forget we basically keep the IT lights on. We're not miracle workers, we just keep it all ticking over. Sometimes that involves clever stuff, mostly it's just practicing good habits.
