I have a non-critical ZFS pool on an old Dell R510 I like to keep handy. Occasionally disks die, and I feed it spares from other retired boxes I can scavenge. The controller doesn't allow passthrough so it has to be bodged with a load of raid0 as single disks. It's clunky, but it does work.

Every time I do a replacement I have to go through the dance with mfiutil and battle the controller. It always works out in the end, but it always takes hours...

Why doesn't Eugen ever boost the GOOD stuff I say, like "panic pixie scream squirrel"

One thing I always liked about his film is the complete lack of pretense. It's just great fun.

Robert Redford is unfailingly cool in everything.

Due to various health problems I did virtually no winter prep for my bikes outside of a full tank of petrol to ward off condensation. Haven't run them since the end of November.

I thought the batteries would be dead but the dual sport had plenty of crank in it. Pulled the stale fuel through the carb in about 6 cranks and then ran. Can't wait to get back on them.

#OpenBSD just fixed and enabled isochronous mode for xhci.

aka, webcams in modern laptops now work. so does usb-audio devices, and probably a few other things.

TEST IT, TEST IT, TEST IT. Find the bugs in it, before we lock for 6.5.

Since I've had so many difficulties with my vision, I've become quite aware of accessibility preferences. Masto is very good; this page is a great example of something that is particularly taxing for me to read. Wiry font, low contrast. Very difficult.

Pretty fascinating deep dive into flight control systems from a former Boeing avionics engineer, and where the 737 MAX 8 MCAS system does not follow normal practice:

As one of those things you'll do so infrequently you won't remember it, CLI CUPS options are a fucking nightmare.

Linux communities in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Africa overall are on the rise.

Been following several local instances, heroes and creators.

Any African Linux users and enthusiasts on Mastodon? Please, chime in 🙂

I'd love to hear more stories, about meetups, startups, successes etc. (!)

Learning to get along with Mutt is an exercise in adaptation, but it's fascinating how once you're used to its quirks and you've got it working how you like, no other mail client feels as simple or flexible.

This is a pattern that's repeated constantly for me, from window managers, to text editors, music players, and other things I haven't thought of.

The only thing I've stuck on is web browsers. They're likely the most sophisticated and chubby software I use.

This is an excellent testimonial to FOSS systems. Regardless of your thoughts on the quality of the product, people bought these things for $900 American. Now, the company is gone and the servers are being shut down. This formerly $900 device is useless for anything other than parts.

I've spent an incredible amount of time fucking about with MPD trying to tag a song. I realised it doesn't like id3 v1 tags, for whatever reason.

Oof. RIP Keith Flint. The Prodigy were one of those acts that really crossed genres. Everybody loved them.

Keith was big into his racing bikes, too.

Today my office ambient noise is accompanied by one of those backhoe jackhammers that never quite settles into a rhythm.
