Voyager's computer systems were custom-built using 1960s technology, with clock speeds measured in KHz and RAM in kbytes, running hand-crafted software, crammed into 4K of 18-bit wide plated-wire memory (similar to but better than core mem).

And yes, it uses digital 8-track tape for storage.

The custom-designed hardware, (upgraded) software and instruments are mostly still functioning after 46 years in space!

In a very long list of things I despise on the internet, those picture grid captures havet to be the absolute worst.

Got a very chunky palo alto firewall for evaluation so I'm going to fuck around with it on my desk. Bye bye little Netgear switch, you served me well and you shall have a little holiday.

These yearly wraps people share should give users pause for thought. This engagement gimmick is a demonstration of what they are selling of you. I know it's fun and I hate to be that guy about it, but there is a downside.

Because I've turned into my mother I've really enjoyed S2 of The Gilded Age, or 'Real Housewives of New York' as some wags have it.

Boss copies me on a mail when I'm on a family outing stating there's an issue on a prod server but "He might not be able to get to it as it is a weekend". You cannot say something like that to someone like me, or any sysadmin. It's really fucking dirty.

I have never understood the way some people use their computers, but starting in the days when Windows needed booting into a particular config to run some games probably inculcated those habits.

Sent this to my sis many years ago. Definitely not because it reminds me of her.

Also on the occasions I've played around with the budget to find money for such things, when I approach departments for a buy-in they're not interested unless it's for their sole use.

Absolutely infuriates me ever since I became 'management'.

I am told, repeatedly, we are the most expensive department in the organization. Any yet they STILL live in a world where resources and the staff to run them cost nothing. "AWS is too expensive" they cry. Funny that. You don't want to pay the Bezos tax? Dig into your pockets.

"Hello, we're trying to recruit ML/DL faculty and wondering what GPU compute resources you could dedicate?"
It's funny, just this morning I was wondering what to do with the brand new GPU server we have in the basement doing nothing. Yes, that's right, the imaginary basement. Imaginary server, too, because SHIT COSTS MONEY AND YOU NEED TO FUCKING BUY IT
