Something I enjoy about the fediverse is when you get these membership surges, because of the curated nature of your timeline, you don't really see it unless you go looking for it. This makes for a much more pleasant experience, and one the other places can't replicate. The lack of manipulated trends helps, too.

It was interesting back in England to have the same feeling return at the earlier darkness. It definitely does something to my mood, the sun going in just after 4.

Do even academics not understand the network effect?

Lately, I’m seeing lots of follow-worthy people posting that it’s much nicer over at #BlueSky than it’s here at #Mastodon, persuading us to move to BlueSky too. Sure, I believe that.

But BlueSky is just another (VC-funded) platform owned by capitalists.

If people stayed at Mastodon, we could avoid the forming of the network effect that made it so hard to escape Twitter/X.

A strange notion to escape X just to hop into BlueSky‘s lap instead.

Do any techie people happen to know why I'm completely unable to access the settings app on an iPad Mini with Voiceover? Visually they're there, but all Voiceover will read is the status bar and absolutely nothing on the screen. It's running iOS 14.4.2 if that matters. I can't update to the latest version because I can't access the settings, which is also why I haven't tried resetting to factory settings. This is maddening and has resulted in me hardly using the device for months.
