Man, Brands.town is the kind of subtlety we need more of.

New Mastodon Instance, Culture Jamming

The main reason I'm doing this, beyond a really funny suggestion by @dustin sparking my imagination, is that in a time of major shifts in the size and norms of the fediverse, doubling down on weird and not taking ourselves too seriously is the best thing we can do.

Fuck corporatization, fuck mainstream social networks, fuck capitalism, and fuck brands. Fuck influencers and advertising and analytics. Fuck turning all of your hobbies and passions into secondary outlets when you just wanted to enjoy something. Fuck real estate development. Fuck billionaires and fuck people trying to pass laws trying to take away your rights. Fuck all of it.

Let's just have fun instead. Let's cause confusion and mayhem and maybe even trick Wendy's into thinking Brands Social into thinking that's just where all the brands go.

I might use one of the recently retired rack servers from work as a poudriere donkey. Did it before and it worked really well.

LLVM is an absolutely insanely long compile on modest hardware. It's probably 80% of most compiler runs in terns of time.

I got a weird corruption issue on my VPS, quite tricky to sort out. Basically I want to do another instance and was getting it ready and of course it's taken all morning just to get it updated and stabilised.

One thing I like about is that on the occasion you really make a mess between the excellent docs and the community there's nearly always an answer.

Do you know what I miss about Web 1.0? Getting to know a place before shooting your mouth off about how it should all work.

Really enjoying . It's very rounded and I like the soap opera bits (Real Housewives of Coruscant). The Rogue One people have a very good grasp of how to tell the broad story.

Although when I first came here someone CW'd a picture of a stick of celery, which I am sorry to admit amuses me to this day.

It's amazing to me just how much discussion there is around CW. I would not have thought this particularly controversial. Maybe it's a sign I've been here long enough not to think about it that much.

Man, @TechUr disappeared just as things got fruity. He would love this, he'd rage on stream for hours on end about it I'm sure.

I've been here since 2018, and before that on GNUSocial. It took me a long time to really get a handle on how it all worked. The people are very different to me; I would very rarely be exposed in my daily life to the diversity.

It takes a while to figure out how it all works. Does it annoy me that somebody that *just* got here acts like they get it all already? Yes it does. Fuck them.

It is engaged with because it's seen as validation of the platform; here is this big shot (but he's ever so humble!) writing about our pet, and even if he's been here two minutes, it's nice to be noticed right?

It's interesting to see the modern content model being tried on Mastodon, with some success (because I see the boosts, although n=1 here so 🤷 )

Here's how it works:

Johnny Big-Follower Tech Personality writes an article - largely negative - about $CURRENT_THING that article is shared on $CURRENT_THING, generating clicks, revenue, and the fabled 'buzz' craved by every marketing dickhead in the land.

Rinse and repeat.

Arch install on Son's PC absolutely hosed itself. Suspect something got corrupted because even chroot is fighting me.
