Although when I first came here someone CW'd a picture of a stick of celery, which I am sorry to admit amuses me to this day.

It's amazing to me just how much discussion there is around CW. I would not have thought this particularly controversial. Maybe it's a sign I've been here long enough not to think about it that much.

Man, @TechUr disappeared just as things got fruity. He would love this, he'd rage on stream for hours on end about it I'm sure.

I've been here since 2018, and before that on GNUSocial. It took me a long time to really get a handle on how it all worked. The people are very different to me; I would very rarely be exposed in my daily life to the diversity.

It takes a while to figure out how it all works. Does it annoy me that somebody that *just* got here acts like they get it all already? Yes it does. Fuck them.

It is engaged with because it's seen as validation of the platform; here is this big shot (but he's ever so humble!) writing about our pet, and even if he's been here two minutes, it's nice to be noticed right?

It's interesting to see the modern content model being tried on Mastodon, with some success (because I see the boosts, although n=1 here so 🤷 )

Here's how it works:

Johnny Big-Follower Tech Personality writes an article - largely negative - about $CURRENT_THING that article is shared on $CURRENT_THING, generating clicks, revenue, and the fabled 'buzz' craved by every marketing dickhead in the land.

Rinse and repeat.

Arch install on Son's PC absolutely hosed itself. Suspect something got corrupted because even chroot is fighting me.

@sullybiker @Aldi@cdrom.tokyo indeed. I had to have a 20m null modem cable specially made so we could string it round the outside of the house, remember?

I'm seeing some celeb accounts. Here's the thing: Celebs are weird. Anyone on Twitter will remember around 2009 when they seemed normal, until they all networked up with their media mates and suddenly resented the proles being able to @ them.

Great 4-part series of Aging Wheel's Trabi engine rebuild. A 600cc 2-stroke. no pumps, no valve train, 27hp (but the car only weighs 600kg)

My worry is the future of the Fedi becomes a multi-tier system.
When Masto started out, its creator seemed happy for every other implementation to die, and it could be argued he encouraged as much (there is a parallel to systemd in all of this) and now there is might on his side.

So, they recreate the old world in the new, and have the infrastructure and money (I don't just mean .social, but some of its relatives) to steer the project in any direction they want.

This is a very good read (big thanks to @nolan ) that articulates some of the experience of the last few days.

It is not unusual to get a brand new server fail on a big feature update. Good luck troubleshooting it.

It is still surprising to me after a decade looking after these things just how fragile Windows Updates can be. They break *constantly*.
